Police revoke emergency declaration covering large area of the Gold Coast after building fire

A fire has ripped through Gold Coast shop leading police to make an emergency declaration due to the risk of the smoke and flames.

An emergency declaration was declared but has since been has been revoked across a wide stretch of the Gold Coast following a fire ripping through a tyre shop – with the thick plume of smoke from the blaze captured on footage.

Police were called to reports of the blaze at a business on West Burleigh Rd in Burleigh Heads about 5.50pm on Monday.

In footage uploaded to Facebook, a thick plume of smoke can be seen from the site.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) have confirmed fire crews are still on the scene working on an active fire.

“There is a fire at the intersection of Starling St and West Burleigh Rd. There will be smoke and a strong smell in the area overnight. Firefighters are working to contain the fire,” the latest QFES warning states.

“Stay informed in case the situation changes. Conditions could change quickly.”

A large exclusion zone was established under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA), encompassing Burleigh St to the north across to West Burleigh Rd to West St, Taliban St and across to Dunlin Dr up to Christine Ave.

“Residents are urged to avoid the area,” a Queensland Police spokesman said in a statement.

At 10.48pm on Monday the emergency decleration was revoked.

“Police would like to thank the community for their assistance,” QPS said.
