One-Day Cup: Mackenzie Harvey posts maiden century against Victoria

A young left-hander has smashed a maiden one-day hundred against his former state as a fast bowler celebrated his Aussie call-up in style.

Mackenzie Harvey blasted a maiden century in his first game against his former state as South Australia annihilated Victoria to claim a bonus-point win in the One-Day Cup.

Harvey (134 off 110 balls) and Daniel Drew (108 off 86) took the Redbacks to 1-289 in the 38th over after Spencer Johnson (4-46) had helped limit the Vics to 7-286 at Karen Rolton Oval.

Johnson celebrated his national squad recall in style as he claimed the vital wicket of Peter Handscomb after the Victorian skipper lifted his side out of early trouble at 3-42 with a brilliant 104.

The left-arm quick was added to Australia’s ODI squad for the remaining two games against Pakistan on Wednesday along with Queensland seamer Xavier Bartlett and NSW keeper Josh Philippe.

It was only Johnson’s second game for the summer after he was forced home from his stint in The Hundred due to a side strain and missed Australia’s white-ball games against Scotland and England.

Handscomb looked in sublime touch as he dug Victoria out of trouble along with Jono Merlo (78), but fell shortly after reaching his hundred with a faint outside edge through to keeper Alex Carey.

The surprise package was Harvey, who opened the batting with Carey and comprehensively outclassed his former Victorian teammates including Sam Elliott, who he took for 16 off his first over.

The 24-year-old, who is the nephew of former ODI all-rounder Ian Harvey, made his first ton in the 50-over format in only his third game since crossing to South Australia.

Carey departed for 36 when he attempted to loft Xavier Crone over long-off only to pick out Peter Siddle on the boundary, but Harvey and Drew continued to motor the innings along to complete the chase inside 40 overs and secure a bonus point.

It was the Redbacks’ second win in three days over Victoria after Lloyd Pope delivered six wickets to spin them to a final-day Sheffield Shield win at the Adelaide Oval on Monday.

The victory broke a nine-year Shield hoodoo for South Australia against Victoria.

The two sides were denied access to a host of Australian ODI squad members who were in Adelaide preparing for the second game against Pakistan on Friday.

Victoria’s Matt Short and Glenn Maxwell and South Australia’s Jake Fraser-McGurk were not allowed to play, despite all three being in search of runs after a disappointing first ODI on Monday.
