More flooding woes for NSW regions across the Central West

AT least two NSW towns are bracing for major flooding and some residents are again facing possible evacuations following heavy rainfall across a large swathe of the state.

AT least two NSW towns are bracing for major flooding and some residents are again facing possible evacuations following heavy rainfall across a large swathe of the state.

The central west and northeast regions copped downpours overnight yesterday and into today, prompting authorities to issue flood warnings for Canowindra and nearby Eugowra where 61 millimetres of rain fell during the deluge.

Although the big wet eased at Eugowra at about 2pm (AEDT), the State Emergency Service (SES) warned of major flooding about 2am on Monday as the Mandagery Creek is expected to peak and likely to burst its banks.

At Canowindra, the Belubula River reached 5.5 metres at 5pm on Sunday and was expected to remain at that height, or possibly even 5.6m, until 10pm.

Several roads and bridges were being closed and low-lying properties are likely to be inundated, the SES said.

Water is likely to enter Wenz Lane and Canowindra Street, with access to shops and residential flats on Gaskill Street in Canawindra's town centre cut off.

Shop owners have been advised to raise furniture and stock as high as possible, the SES added.

At Eugowra, roads and bridges around the town were also expected to close, while those in low-lying areas were warned they might be asked to leave their properties.

An evacuation centre has been established at Eugowra Public School.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning for an area west of Eugowra, with large hail storms, very heavy rain and flash flooding on Sunday afternoon, potentially affecting West Wyalong, Griffith and Tilpa.

The SES also said it is on standby to help in the northeast.

It warned of possible flooding on the Tweed, Richmond and Wilson river valleys.

Parts of the state are still recovering from the worst flooding in decades, sparked by heavy rain through December.

There are 49 natural disaster zones currently declared by the NSW government.
