Machete-wielding man killed in far north Queensland

Police have shot and killed a man who allegedly advanced toward officers while armed with a machete and a knife.

Police have shot and killed a man in Townsville after he allegedly advanced toward officers while armed with a machete and a knife.

Emergency services were called to North Ward at the intersection of McKinley Street and The Strand around 9:50am on Saturday following reports of a man armed with a machete and a knife.

Officers tried to use a taser on the man, but it was unsuccessful.

According to initial reports, the man approached officers while armed and was subsequently shot in the chest.

Emergency services provided medical assistance at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesman said paramedics were on scene and assessed a male patient in a “life-threatening condition”.

No police officers or members of the public were physically harmed during the incident.

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the incident, with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.
