Joon Seong Tan: Jealous man murdered woman and dumped body in bin

A Supreme Court jury has convicted a man over the murder of his ex-girlfriend, whose body was later dumped in a bin.

A jury has found a Melbourne man jealously murdered a woman after she rejected his romantic advances.

The Victorian Supreme Court reconvened shortly after 2pm on Wednesday as the foreperson announced they had reached a verdict in the trial of Joon Seong Tan.

The jury unanimously found Tan had murdered Ju “Kelly” Zhang, 33, in February 2021, before dumping her body in a rubbish bin.

Remains later identified as the missing mother of one were found months later as investigators searched a landfill in Melbourne’s outer north over three days.

The court was told Tan had met Ms Zhang on an online dating site about a month before her death, becoming “very much infatuated”.

She, however, did not reciprocate the feelings.

The jury was told it was believed Tan stabbed Ms Zhang to death after sharing dinner with her and her son.

He was arrested in connection to her disappearance later the same month at Melbourne airport.

After the verdict was read, Justice Amanda Fox thanked the jury for their service over the almost month-long trial.

Tan is expected to return before the Supreme Court next week for a plea hearing.
