Jeremy Rockliff’s bold billboard move ahead of Tasmanian election
An Aussie Premier, with the help of a tractor and his mum, has scaled up his election campaign with a bold move that can spotted from kilometres away.
Just weeks away from an election, the Tasmanian Premier has scaled up his election campaign with a “billboard” twice the size of the MCG.
Previously a farmer, Jeremy Rockliff enlisted a friend to plough his campaign slogan “2030 Strong Plan” into a paddock at his mum’s farm in Tasmania’s north west ahead of the state election.
The eight hectare paddock took more than an hour to plough, with GPS technology often used for precision agriculture enlisted to get the job done.
The entirety of the slogan spans about 250 metres, with each letter measuring about 40 metres in length and 20 metres in width.
A campaign spokesperson said the billboard is fitting for a “down to earth” Premier.
“At your typical Australian political campaign launch, you’re in a stuffy conference room, with bright lights, a big stage and loud music,” the spokesperson said.
“That’s just not Jeremy’s style. When his mum Gerry opened the gate to hosting the event at the farm where Jeremy grew up, it just seemed perfect.
“As his family have said, he’s gone from running around here in the paddocks to running the state – and he’s never lost sight of where he came from.”
Mr Rockliff kept with the farming theme as he arrived at his campaign launch on Sunday, riding the same tractor used to create the billboard.
Tasmanians will place their votes on March 23, with the premier to go head to head with Labor leader Rebecca White.
The state is currently the only Liberal government in Australia with the party having held the state since 2014, and Mr Rockliff acting as Premier since April 2022.
Mr Rockliff and Ms White will go head to head just three days before the election at the The Sky News / Mercury People’s Forum on March 20.
