Fitzgibbon rules out special Labor meeting
A KEY backer of Kevin Rudd says Labor members are concerned about the polls but there won't be a special caucus meeting to change leaders.
CHIEF government whip Joel Fitzgibbon has ruled out a extraordinary meeting of the Labor caucus to deal with the leadership.
But he says caucus members are examining the polls and "expressing concern about the future of the government and indeed the party".
"The newspapers are full of it so the public must conclude that something must be going on," Mr Fitzgibbon told Fairfax Media in an interview posted online on Wednesday.
"It would be silly to tell people ... that there is nothing going on."
However, Mr Fitzgibbon - believed to be a key numbers man for Kevin Rudd - ruled out a special meeting of the caucus.
"The prime minister continues to enjoy the support of the party room," he said.
"I think people prove themselves a little bit over excited speculating that there will be a change this week or indeed necessarily before the election."
He said it was a "silly" suggestion that Labor could change leaders between the budget sittings in May and the September 14 election.
