Dominic Perrottet’s NSW Liberals replacement revealed as Mark Speakman
A former NSW attorney general has won the numbers to become the Liberals’ next leader in a Friday morning meeting.
The new leader of the NSW Liberals has been revealed, one month after Dominic Perrottet led the party to a crushing election defeat.
Former attorney general Mark Speakman won the numbers to clinch the role in a Friday morning meeting.
“I’m running on a united team with Damien Tudehope and Natalie Ward,” he previously said.
Mr Speakman, a moderate who represents Cronulla, earlier confirmed he would face off against former planning minister Anthony Roberts for the top job.
Mr Speakman was elected 22 votes to 13 over Mr Roberts during the meeting.
Former roads minister Natalie Ward is expected to be elected as deputy leader.
Former treasurer Matt Kean was initially tipped choice to take over but instead withdrew from the race in order to focus on his family.
Mr Perrotet stepped down as leader after the Liberals lost the NSW government after its state election in March.
The final result left Labor two seats short of the 47 required to form a majority.
The Liberal Party will hold 36 seats, while there are nine independents and three Green MP’s making up the balance of the lower house.
