A second burnt-out vehicle with a distinctive detail has been located as police search for killer of a former underworld figure and kickboxer in Melbourne's northeast.

Sam “The Punisher” Abdulrahim was savagely gunned down in the carpark of a Preston hotel shortly after 10am on Tuesday as he walked with a woman to his car.

The woman, believed to be his girlfriend, rushed to administer first aid until police and paramedics arrived.

The 32-year-old man was declared dead at the scene.

Police said a white Porsche Macan SUV seen driving away from the carpark after the shooting and found burnt-out in Resevoir was linked to the brazen killing.

Investigators have since discovered a second vehicle they believe is linked to the shooting: a grey-coloured Ford Ranger found burnt-out in Westmeadows.

The vehicle had a “distinctive sticker of bull horns” on the rear window of the canopy is strongly believed to be have been linked to Abdulrahim’s death.

Officers have appealed for anyone who may have seen either vehicle travelling through the area in the lead up to, or after, the incident to contact police.

The murder comes after multiple attempts on Abdulrahim’s life, including two shootings at his family home in Thomastown, prompting him to go into hiding.

Video footage obtained by the Herald Sun after Abdulrahim’s death shows the ex-gangland figure turned pro kickboxer in a heated conversation with a gangland rival prior to the shooting by an unknown assailant.

Abdulrahim can be heard in the undated video joking with his rival over the failed attempts on Abdulrahim’s life.

“Hey, I’m still alive brother. Eight shots later and I’m still alive,” Abdulrahim tells the man.

The man replies: “You’re lucky. Luck, luck, luck.”

Earlier in the video, a third person is heard on the phone telling Abdulrahim: “You can’t protect yourself, my brother.”

The kickboxer replies that he “can protect myself” and that “none of your boys are anywhere to be seen down here”.

Police are yet to identify any suspect in the shooting. The man on the phone is not accused of being in any way connected to Abdulrahim’s death.

The date of the call is not known and includes discussion about money being offered, believed to be about extortion prices to be imposed on smoke shops.

At one point, Abdulrahim can be heard saying that “you’ve got too much, give me some money”, before the man sarcastically replied: “I’m doing it hard”.

Police will probe any potential connection between Victoria’s ongoing illicit tobacco turf war, that has seen many stores razed, with the shooting of Abdulrahim.

Detective Inspector Dean Thomas said police had been aware of past threats to Abdulrahim’s life, and spoke to him, but weren’t aware of any recent signs.

“We are aware that there has been a number of incidents in the past where threats have been made to this particular male,” Inspector Thomas said.

“On each occasion, safety warnings have been provided to him by Victoria Police.”

Asked if he thought it was “only a matter of time” given the threats made against Abdulrahim previously, Inspector Thomas said “I think common sense prevails”.

“Perhaps that is the case. But, at this stage we have nothing to suggest there was a live threat that was imminent,” Inspector Thomas said.

“Because, if we did, then we would have shared that information with him.

“We believe he was aware his life was at risk and may still have been at risk … He was provided with options.”

Adbulrahim survived multiple earlier shootings, including when he was shot five times in 2022.

A white Porsche SUV police believe is linked to the slaying was seen leaving the car park immediately after, before being dumped and set on fire in nearby Reservoir.

They are calling on anyone who may have seen the vehicle in Preston or Reservoir, or who may have CCTV or dashcam video, to come forward.

Homicide squad detectives are investigating the death of the former Mongol bikie-turned-kickboxer who had been living on the run.

Over years, Abdulrahim survived multiple attempts on his life, including when his parents’ home was sprayed with 17 bullets in May, 2024.

Two years earlier, he survived another shooting at Fawkner Cemetery on June 25, 2022 — when he was shot five times in the chest and stomach.
