Outraged shoppers have taken to social media to slam a Sydney supermarket after a customer spotted a vile detail on a Tim Tam packet.

In a post on Reddit, a social media user shared an image of a Tim Tam packet on the shelf at Coles in Burwood that appeared to have been eaten by rats or mice.

The Arnott’s packet had a large hole in the middle, with bite marks visible in at least three of the coconut-flavoured Tim Tams.

“Welcome to Burwood Coles local attraction,” a disgruntled customer captioned the post.

A commenter claimed it was not uncommon to see pest-ravaged goods in the supermarket.

“Yeh not the first time, I’ve shopped there and seen this many times,” they said.

But a Coles spokesman said thorough investigations have found no evidence of pests within the store or relevant distribution centres.

“Our NSW team has undertaken a thorough inspection of our local distribution centre and store and found no evidence of rodent activity particularly in respect of the product that we have been alerted to,” the spokesman said.

“We are aware of no other incidents that have occurred with respect to these products. We continue to take food safety very seriously.”

Other commenters on the Reddit thread questioned the supermarket’s management and product checks.

“Suspect this will sit on a shelf in Coles Burwood for a prolonged period before being noticed by management,” one commented.

While some commenters were appalled to see the image, others tried to make light of the post.

“To be fair, those coconut Tim Tams are delicious,” one commenter wrote.

“Rats! I was up for some Coconut Creams,” another said.

Coles has been contacted for further comment.
