Carlton veteran Jess Dal Pos is hopeful of overcoming a calf injury in time for a farewell game on Saturday night after calling time on her nine-year AFLW career.

Dal Pos has retired after 32 games for the Blues and 37 as an inaugural GWS player, where she won a best and fairest and claimed All-Australian honours in the competition’s first season.

The 31-year-old missed the final month of 2023 with a fractured tibia and decided to transition into coaching as a playing assistant this season.

Before she was drafted, Dal Pos was part of the Darebin Falcons VWFL powerhouse alongside the likes of Daisy Pearce, Paxy Paxman and Katie Brennan.

“My time within the AFLW, at the Giants and the Blues has been nothing short of incredible … it has been a long journey, having played over 150 games at Darebin Falcons,” Dal Pos said.

“Seeing the change and evolution of AFLW has been wonderful and it has been so special playing a role in growing the opportunities for more women to play elite sport.

“I am excited to see where this club is headed, and although I am retiring, there is no doubt I am going to be cheering on from the sidelines.

“I also wanted to express huge thank you to the strength, conditioning and medical staff who have helped me throughout my run of injuries, I owe them a lot for their passion and time they have devoted to my rehab.

“I am grateful for everyone who has played a part in my career, especially for my family who has supported me every step of the way. They have been instrumental in their support and commitment, not only to myself but to the growth of women’s footy in general.”

Carlton coach Mathew Buck said Dal Pos had been a “true pioneer for the game”.

“Her knowledge and experience at the highest level has been invaluable. Having Jess be a clear link between the coaches and players and watching her develop in her coaching ability throughout the year has been excellent,” he said.

“Jess has had a hard run with injuries over the past few seasons but has never let them define her.

“The resilience she has shown throughout, to get her body right is a true testament to her hard work and dedication to the sport.”

Dal Pos has been sidelined for the last three games with a calf injury, but remains in the frame to face Essendon at Ikon Park on Saturday night.

The Bombers must win to avoid losing their top eight spot to Melbourne, who will face bottom side Collingwood at the same venue earlier in the day.
