AFL 2025: Brisbane skipper Harris Andrews says the Lions are yet to produce their best
Brisbane is undefeated and will head into Gather Round favourites to go 5-0, but the skipper thinks the Lions have got plenty to improve.
Brisbane Lions co-captain Harris Andrews has issued an ominous warning to the rest of the competition, insisting the undefeated Lions “have a lot of improvement in us”.
The Lions went on to win the premiership despite a 0-3 start to the season in 2024 but have enjoyed an unblemished month to start 2025.
Andrews is pleased to have come away with four wins but feels the Lions have only been good in patches and their best is in front of them.
“We’re obviously pumped to be 4-0, it’s a lot nicer than 0-3 like we were last year,” he said.
“But at the same time, we feel like we’ve got a lot of improvement in us and we’re probably not playing the footy we want to playing be right at this moment.
“Overall we’re getting some results, putting together some good patches of play but we’re probably still chasing that four-quarter effort.
“Next week we play against the Dogs in Gather Round, that’ll be another challenge, they’ve had a good start to the year and playing with some real passion.”
The Lions’ midfield – Lachie Neale, Josh Dunkley, Hugh McCluggage and Will Ashcroft – combined for 122 disposals and three goals in their win over Richmond.
Ashcroft lit up the MCG again, backing up his Norm Smith Medal winning show in last year’s grand final with 24 disposals and two goals.
Andrews says Ashcroft is a “bull in the clinches” and has no doubt the addition of younger brother and top draftee Levi had is helping him take another step this season.
“Around the ball he’s so clean, so tidy and crafty and skilful at the same time, we love having him in the team,” he said.
“He’s someone who will always strive to get better and that internal motivation I admire, he’s absolutely doing everything he can to get the best out of himself.
“They (Will and Levi) definitely bounce off each other, it’s helped him come out of his shell a bit more, he can sometimes be a quiet guy who goes about his business quietly.
“Having Levi around has been awesome for him, opening up a little bit more, and he’s such a professional we love having him.”
The Lions have a challenging fortnight ahead with Western Bulldogs in Gather Round before Collingwood in its annual Good Friday Eve clash at The Gabba.
