Larissa Beilby death: Emergency situation declared in Alexandra Headlands
Queensland police have cornered Zlatko Sikorsky in a unit complex following the grim discovery of Larissa Beilby, 16.
Police have cornered a man wanted over the discovery of a body in a barrel.
Zlatko Sikorsky is pinned down in a unit complex on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, with police saying he is believed to be alone and that they are negotiating his surrender.
An emergency situation was declared at 3.25pm in Juan St, Alexandra Headland, under the Public Safety Preservation Act.
“Residents located inside the declared area are asked to remain indoors and members of the public are asked to avoid the area,” police said in a statement.
“The man is believed to be alone inside the unit. There is no further information that can be provided at this time.”
Sikorsky, 34, has been on the run since the gruesome discovery of the body on Wednesday.
Police had warned the public not to approach him and said he might be armed, possibly with a shotgun.
Superintendent Darryl Johnson said police had the situation “contained” but warned residents to stay clear.
“Tonight we’re negotiating with a man believed responsible for a homicide in Logan,” he said.
“We’re just asking people in the local area here to stay away, so those people who are here just to stay inside at the moment.
“There’s no threats involved at all. I won’t go into what’s happening inside at the moment. We have our specialists inside and we hope to resolve this situation peacefully tonight.”
An eyewitness to the siege said he could hear a man making demands in a neighbouring unit, The Courier-Mail reported.
“He hasn’t walked outside to the balcony. I can clearly hear him. He wants to speak to his girlfriend and father.
“I believe he is on the phone to a negotiator.”
And Nine News reported the man wanted to speak to his father and was heard warning he would shoot if police came near.
Officers investigating the disappearance of 16-year-old Larissa Beilby had arrived at a home at Buccan, south of Brisbane.
But when they knocked on the door a man, believed to be Sikorsky, ran out a back door and fled in a ute.
The ute was later found abandoned at Stapylton, and the body was discovered in a barrel in the tray of the vehicle.
It came as Queensland’s deputy Opposition Leader Tim Mander said the case raised serious questions about the state’s parole system.
Police have had a warrant to arrest Sikorsky since March, after he breached his parole conditions, but he had remained free.
“The person has a long, violent criminal record and is currently out on parole. In fact, he had breached parole,” Mr Mander said
“It’s a reasonable question for people to ask: Why is this man out on the streets?”
