Mick Keelty is to step down as Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police in September.

Mick Keelty is to step down as Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police in September.

Mr Keelty, who has been under pressure over the Haneef affair, sent an internal email to AFP staff announcing his decision to resign.

The AFP would not confirm or deny the report when contacted by AAP.

"We have no comment to make at this stage,'' a spokeswoman said, but an announcement is expected to follow soon.

Mr Keelty, despite recent controversies, received Indonesia's highest policing award in 2003 for the AFP's close cooperation with the Indonesian National Police (INP) in combating terrorism.

The 54-year-old rose through the ranks to be appointed assistant commissioner in 1995, deputy in 1998, finally taking on the top role in April 2001.
