Clive Palmer discontinues nephew Clive Mensink’s lawsuits over contamination

Clive Palmer has taken the extraordinary step of cancelling his fugitive nephew Clive Mensink’s legal battle with environmental authorities over alleged contamination by the defunct Townsville nickel refinery.
In an affidavit filed to the state’s Planning and Environment Court late yesterday, Mr Mensink’s solicitor, Jeff Smith, confirmed that he had discontinued the three lawsuits on April 11 — on the orders of Mr Palmer.
“I am informed by Mr Palmer, and I believe that Mr Palmer has the authority to issue instructions on behalf of Mr Mensink, who is a relative and trusted business associate of Mr Palmer, while Mr Mensink is absent from Australia, travelling abroad,” Mr Smith’s affidavit reads.
The state’s Environment Department alleges the mothballed nickel refinery breached regulations after tests found high levels of ammonia in the operation’s tailings dams and in nearby creeks last year.
