‘Policy that works’

The Australian understands Derryn Hinch, Rebekha Sharkie and Julia Banks have not taken up the offer of top security briefings on the consequences of medical evacuations from Nauru. Wentworth MP Kerryn Phelps, the architect of the plan to get two doctors to approve the evacuation of asylum seekers, received a security briefing yesterday.

Scott Morrison has dismissed Labor claims that they would retain ministerial oversight over any medical recommendations to evacuate asylum seekers from Nauru under the amendments. Keep up with the latest from parliament in our live blog, PoliticsNow.

“We’ve got a clear policy — it’s working. It is worked for five years.

“Why would you change something that has demonstrably worked so successfully, so hard won, and at great cost. Why on earth would Bill Shorten sell all of that out for a cheap day in politics?”

Chris Dawson has landed

Chris Dawson spent his extradition flight to Sydney this morning staring out the window, like he was taking in a “last taste of freedom”, a passenger says. Seated in the window seat in row 30, the last row of seats on the plane, Mr Dawson occasionally spoke to police and had his breakfast on the 90-minute flight. Following his arrival he will be formally charged with the murder of his wife, Lyn, almost 37 years ago.

Comment of the day

“Thanks Malcolm Turnbull: your decision to promote Phelps over David Sharma, and telling Banks to desert the Liberal Party has just resulted in the people smugglers restarting illegal people’s trade.

“The first drownings, the first deaths, the first misery and all that follow will be as a result of your decision to trash the Liberal Party and their policies.”

Fred, in response to ‘Scott Morrison faces prospect of defeat on key border protection changes’.
