Extended leave

Barnaby Joyce has taken extended personal leave until the end of June, effective immediately, and is not expected to return to parliament until August. The Australian understands Mr Joyce — who has not taken extended leave since his affair with former staffer Vikki Campion was revealed earlier this year — has come under personal stress following revelations the couple agreed to a $150,000 paid interview with the Seven Network. Keep up with all the latest from parliament in our live blog, PoliticsNow.

“I couldn’t help it. You can’t help who you fall in love with.”

Serena, warrior princess

New mum Serena Williams has made her return to grand slam tennis as memorable as her body-hugging “warrior’’ black suit. The 36-year-old downed Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 at Roland Garros to register her first victory at the majors since her 2017 Australian Open triumph.
