A dramatic collapse in negotiations over funding for the border wall has shattered hopes of an imminent solution to the US government shutdown.

A ­potentially fatal mistake nearly brought Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun’s ­escape from an allegedly violent ­father to a disastrous end.
