‘Labor, Greens gang up on Downer’
The Liberal Party’s star recruit, Georgina Downer, has been dealt a huge blow in her bid to become the Downer family’s third-generation MP.
Labor and the Greens both placed Centre Alliance candidate Rebekha Sharkie second on their how-to-vote cards for the Mayo by-election.
The ABC’s election analyst Antony Green said the preferences would be “hugely” beneficial for Ms Sharkie, who in 2016 as a Nick Xenophon Team candidate won the safe Liberal seat off Jamie Briggs on preferences.

Last cave boys out tonight
The remaining four Wild Boar football players and their coach still trapped inside the flooded Tham Luang cave in northern Thailand will be freed today, rescue chief Narongsak Osaththanakorn has just said.
“If there are no abnormal factors, five will come out today,” he announced to spontaneous cheers from the assembled media.

Gay couple refused wedding cake
A same-sex Australian couple’s wedding plans were almost thrown in disarray after a baker refused to make them a cake.
When the pair contacted Kath’s Devine Cakes last year, they received an email from the bakery which stated they could not make the cake because it went against their beliefs.
“Even though as individuals you are both fabulous and amazing people, I must follow the integrity of my heart and beliefs,” the email from the store, posted by the couple on social media, read.

Elusive ‘monster’ croc caught
After a decade on the run, authorities have finally captured a Northern Territory “monster” that had locals fearing for their lives.
NT Parks and Wildlife rangers caught the 4.7-metre, 600kg saltwater crocodile at a private property at Taylor’s Park, 60km downstream from Katherine.
