Public service chief quits after grilling
Public service commissioner John Lloyd has resigned after he faced a long grilling in Senate Estimates over his links to the Institute of Public Affairs.
Mr Lloyd faced questions over the past two weeks after he emailed the head of the Institute of Public Affairs a day after he was questioned in a separate Senate estimates hearing.

Slater out of Origin opener
Billy Slater has been ruled out of the opening State of Origin game.
Slater, who carried a dodgy hamstring into the Queensland camp, was officially scratched today in a devastating blow to the Maroons only 48 hours before the series was due to begin at the MCG on Wednesday night.

‘There was no justice for me’
The police officer who was kicked in the head by a teenager on Boxing Day has told a court he has been let down by the system.
The police officer was attacked by the 17-year-old while he was kneeling on the ground trying to restrain a young shoplifter at the Highpoint Shopping Centre.
His attacker was sentenced in January to a nine-month probation order with no conviction recorded.

Supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths are stepping up their war on plastic, introducing new targets to slash the amount of wrapping on fresh fruit and vegetables as well as tackling food waste.
Volcano’s deadly eruption
And one of Central America’s most active volcanoes — Guatemala’s Volcan de Fuego — has erupted in fiery explosions of ash and molten rock, killing at least 25 people and injuring 20.
An undetermined number were missing, and authorities feared the toll could rise.
