‘I’ve got some things to say’

Best actress winner Frances McDormand made all the nominated women in the audience stand as she delivered a stinging message to Hollywood at the Oscars.

“I’ve got some things to say. We all have stories to tell and stories that need to be financed. Invite us into your office and we’ll tell you all about them. I have two words: Inclusion rider.”

PM denies Joyce threat on Abbott

Malcolm Turnbull’s office has denied a report that Barnaby Joyce threatened to work with Tony Abbott to undermine the Prime Minister’s leadership.

Sky News reported today that the former Nationals leader made the threat on the day of the Prime Minister’s “sex ban” announcement.

Mr Joyce — under pressure over his relationship with pregnant staffer Vikki Campion — reportedly told Mr Turnbull: “I’m sure if we had the time, Tony (Abbott) and I could get the numbers.”

This is a national tragedy

Aboriginal girls are now almost 60 times more likely to contract syphilis than their non-Aboriginal counterparts, and 30 times more likely to contract gonorrhoea.

I don’t know about you but the word in that sentence that jumps out for me isn’t Aboriginal, writes Caroline Overington.

It’s “underage.”

Qantas ‘should be applauded’

Tony Abbott says Qantas has gone PC mad, with the airline telling staff to use “gender-appropriate’’ words and to recognise the reality of Australian invasion.

But Diversity Council of Australia CEO Lisa Annese said the advice had come from a project the council had done last year called “words at work”, which was designed to “build inclusive workplaces around the power of language”.

“People who are trying to do the right thing need to be applauded, not criticised.”
