Protest rallies around the country have marked Australia Day as a “day of mourning’’ with calls for the date to be changed. Former AHRC president Gillian Triggs attended a rally in Sydney, throwing her support behind calls for the Turnbull government to reach a treaty with the Aboriginal people. Meanwhile, Malcolm Turnbull has dismissed calls to change the Australian flag, claiming younger generations see it as a symbol of the nation.

Police officer stabbed at pub

A 50-year-old police officer has been stabbed in Maroubra in Sydney’s east, and another person has been injured. The alleged offender has been shot dead.
