‘We signed up, we stick to it’

Cabinet ministers have hit back at Tony Abbott’s calls for the government to abandon the Paris climate agreement, arguing Australia must remain bound to any international agreement it signs.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said pulling out of the Paris agreement would undermine Australia’s foreign policy.

“We then signed an international agreement and Australia plays by the rules. If we sign an agreement, we stick to that agreement, and the Paris agreement targets are achievable.”

Media split over Nauru protest

A split has emerged in the Canberra press gallery over the boycott of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s trip to Nauru in September, with major media organisations supporting a boycott of the Pacific Islands Forum in protest against the island nation’s ban on the ABC.

It means that News Corp mastheads, including The Australian, will be the only outlets to report on the event, which has grown in significance due to the government’s efforts to curb Chinese foreign interference.
