Donald and Melania Trump have been gifted his and hers RM Williams boots from the Turnbulls — iconic Australian leather boots that are often the shoe of choice for parliamentarians, city and country people alike.

Lucy Turnbull also picked out a navy silk scarf featuring native gums and birds by Utopia Goods, a design store based in Paddington, Sydney, in the heart of Malcolm Turnbull’s Wentworth electorate.

The scarf fetches $159 online while the “classic craftsman” and “Adelaide” boots chosen for the US President and Mrs Trump go for around $545 a pair, paid for by Australian taxpayers.

There is much emphasis placed on the exchange of gifts between prime ministers and presidents, with Mr Turnbull carefully choosing a wooden golf ball presentation box to Mr Trump for their first face-to-face meeting last year.

Julia Gillard loaded classic Australian tunes onto an MP3 player for Barack Obama in honour of their first White House meeting and added a souvenir Aussie rules football for good measure.
