Berejiklian threatens to move against MP Daryl Maguire

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is ­expected to threaten Liberal MP Daryl ­Maguire with an expulsion order from parliament when she ­returns from leave on Monday if he does not quit and force a by-election.

But Mr Maguire, the Member for Wagga Wagga, dug his heels in yesterday, indicating he would not be leaving parliament before it resumed on August 7.

He refused to comment further on the ICAC saga in which he admitted to the corruption watchdog he had sought secret commissions from a developer.

The Australian has been told Ms Berejiklian, who has been holidaying interstate, is furious at Mr Maguire and plans to talk to him next week about retiring.

“She’s certainly of the view that he should go and we should (suck) up the by-election,” one of the Premier’s allies said. Another said Ms Berejiklian believed Mr Maguire had lost the confidence of his electorate.

Labor is set to force the government’s hand, with Acting Opposition Leader Michael Daley threatening an ­expulsion motion when parliament resumes.

The Nationals are annoyed Ms Berejiklian has not moved more quickly to force out Mr Maguire. “There is absolutely no way a Nationals MP would vote to keep him in the parliament,” a senior Nationals source said.

One senior Liberal also indicated they would cross the floor rather than vote to keep Mr ­Maguire in parliament.

Mr Maguire quit the Liberal Party and moved to the crossbench after being exposed at the corruption watchdog.

The Australian also understands the Nationals have contacted Warren Mundine, a former national ALP president, about running for the seat of Dubbo to replace retiring Police Minister Troy Grant. However, Mr Mundine did not respond to their overtures.
