FORMER judge and Melbourne University chancellor Alex Chernov will be Victoria's next governor, Premier Ted Baillieu has announced.

Mr Chernov, a senior lawyer and former Supreme Court judge who has been chancellor of the University of Melbourne since early 2009, will replace David de Kretser, who has been the state's governor since April 2006.

“The offer came to me like a bolt out of the blue,” Mr Chernov said in Melbourne.

“The last thing I thought I would ever do is be the governor of this state.”

Mr Chernov, 72, was born in Lithuania and appointed to the Victorian Supreme Court in 1997.

He is married with three children and six grandchildren.

Mr de Kretser's five-year tenure expires in April. The former medical researcher was appointed by former Labor premier Steve Bracks.
