Malcolm Turnbull lives amid wealth, with 41 per cent of voters in his suburb of Woollahra in the top 20 per cent of earners, a concentration of income surpassed only in Mosman in the electorate of his predecessor, Tony Abbott.

Although far from harbourside wealth, more than half of Bill Shorten’s electorate of Maribyrnong is in the solid middle-class suburb of Moonee Valley, which is under less cost-of-living pressure than 60 per cent of the country. People in the top-earning fifth of the population make up 24 per cent of Moonee Valley’s population, against only 18.1 per cent in the poorest quintile.

But the 30 per cent of Mr Shorten’s electorate that is in Brimbank is doing it much tougher, with little more than one in 10 in the top-earning quintile, while living standards are in the bottom 40 per cent.

The electorate of his Treasury spokesman, Chris Bowen, takes in large slices of Fairfield and Cumberland, where living standards are in the bottom 20 per cent.

Treasurer Scott Morrison home is in Sutherland shire, which is in the highest living standard quintile, while Rockdale and Georges River, also in his electorate of Cook, are much closer to the national average.
