Special Minister of State Scott Ryan has taken an extended leave of absence from parliamentary duties to recovery from an illness.

The Victorian senator told constituents yesterday that he was extending a period of sick leave after developing some complications from treatment he took early this month for a longstanding medical issue.

He has handed over responsibilities for his portfolio in the interim to senator Matthias Cormann, and has asked for privacy as he recovers.

“Earlier in July, I took a short period of leave to address some longstanding medical issues,’’ Senator Ryan said.

“In attending to these, a number of complications developed, some of which require further attention. “I have consequently sought an additional period of leave from my Senate and ministerial duties. I will return to full duties as soon as I am recovered.”

The government confirmed yesterday it was general practice for MPs and senators to be paired when unable to attend parliament because of illness, a rule applied when former Greens senator Scott Ludlam took time off to treat his depression.
