Pamela Anderson has written to Immigration Minister Peter Dutton asking for an investigation into alleged animal cruelty on Manus Island.

The former Baywatch star and activist claimed in a letter to Dutton that a dog “was thrown from a moving bus” by a guard as detainees were moved from the island’s main detention facility to alternative accommodation last month.

While labelling the continued detainment of refugees as “appalling”, Anderson — writing on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) — instead highlighted the mistreatment of the dog, Foxy, who was accompanying a refugee.

“Animals feel pain, stress, and fear just as we do, and such callous abuse is unacceptable and threatens everyone in your care on Manus,” Anderson said.

“Foxy’s primary caregiver is understandably distraught by the guard’s actions. Displaced people often form close bonds with animals, who provide unconditional love and hope.

“May I hear from you soon that you’ll launch an investigation into this incident and give Foxy and her guardian the justice they deserve?”

Anderson, 50, has worked as human, animal and environmental rights activist for over 20 years through her charity The Pamela Anderson Foundation. In that time she’s supported migrant aid operations, the Sea Shepherd, the United States’ domestic violence hotline and the campaign to free Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

Last week Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce warned Jacinda Ardern to “stay away” from the issue of resettlement as the New Zealand Prime Minister offered to accept 150 refugees.
