Labor frontbencher Linda Burney met with the same billionaire Chinese businessman behind the demise of senator Sam Dastyari’s political career a month before she was sworn in as a member of parliament last year.
The Daily Telegraph has today revealed Ms Burney met with Huang Xiangmo in North Sydney in June last year. It comes as Ms Burney this week was the first MP to recommend Mr Dastyari “consider his position” in light of his connection with Mr Huang.
According to The Daily Telegraph, the MP’s meeting with Mr Huang occurred in the same month that Chaoshan No 1 Pty Ltd, a company affiliated with the businessman, donated $30,000 to the Labor Party but it is unclear whether the meeting took place before or after the donation.
Ms Burney defended her meeting with Mr Huang, telling The Daily Telegraph the pair’s talk was brief and that “the Prime Minister, Julie Bishop, Tony Abbott, Barnaby Joyce and Andrew Robb” had also sat down with the developer.
“Our discussion was brief and touched upon the Chinese community in Hurstville,” she said. “I understand donations have been made from Mr Huang to both sides of politics. Labor no longer accepts donations from foreign donors.”
