Reform of 457 visa program would create 7000 jobs: ACTU

Reforms to the 457 visa program would create 7000 training jobs, the ACTU will tell a Senate inquiry into temporary visas.

Sweeping reforms to the 457 visa program would create 7000 training jobs, the ACTU will tell a Senate inquiry into temporary visas this week.

The plan devised by unions would force employers who hire four or more 457 visa holders to ensure apprentices and trainees make up 25 per cent of their workforce. Other measures would include “stronger requirements on employers to train and employ apprentices, trainees and graduates in the same occupations where they are currently using 457 visa workers”.

The ACTU has also called for sponsors of 457 visa workers to make a $4000 payment into a dedicated training fund.
