HUNDREDS of young unemployed people have started work-for-the-dole activities under the Abbott government’s welfare reforms.

The program is being rolled out in 18 areas including Richmond, Tweed, Ballina, Byron Bay, Coffs Harbour and the Clarence Valley in NSW. Across the country, 40,000 young unemployed people who have claimed Newstart or Youth Allowance are being shifted on to the program for up to 15 hours a week.

Assistant Employment Minister Luke Hartsuyker said phase-one of the program started on July 1. “In just under three weeks, we have had thousands of potential host organisations offer opportunities for jobseekers to undertake work for the dole. Hundreds of people have already commenced in a work-for-the-dole activity.”

Work-for-the-dole activities include placements with organisations such as the Salvation Army and group placements completing projects such as bike paths.
