Systematic issues within the Newcastle Anglican Diocese allowed a group of perpetrators to operate, the royal commission report on child sexual abuse in the diocese has found.

The long-awaited report from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse was released today and found Newcastle diocese bishops Alfred Holland and Roger Herft showed a distinct lack of leadership that allowed alleged perpetrators to not be called to account.

The report follows a public hearing in August 2016 in Newcastle and November 2016 in Sydney that heard from survivors of child sexual abuse perpetrated by Anglican Diocese of Newcastle clergy and laypeople.
