Teachers let down by delayed action

PRINCIPALS and teachers have welcomed the the recommendations for a new school funding model, but are disappointed by the Gillard government's decision to consult before responding.
Associations representing government school teachers, the Catholic school system and independent schools spoke out yesterday and most say they need more detail on how the proposed system would work and a commitment from the government for funding.
The 18-month review -- headed by University of NSW chancellor David Gonski -- says state and federal governments need to pump another $5 billion a year into schools. The federal government has refused to commit to providing that funding or introducing the model, instead opting for more consultation.
Australian Education Union federal president Angelo Gavrielatos urged the government to move immediately on the recommendations.
"We now have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to move to a fairer funding system that better meets the needs of all students," he said.
Independent Schools Victoria chief executive Michelle Green said the government's response to the Gonski report "did not respond" to any of the recommendations. "We are none the wiser."
