Queensland follows Victoria lead on Gonski

QUEENSLAND is defecting from Julia Gillard's education-funding reforms, following Victoria's lead to go it alone on Gonski.

Queensland Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said the state's department was working on its own plan for education after becoming frustrated with a lack of detail on reforms from the federal Labor government.

Mr Langbroek said while Queensland would continue to work with the federal government, they were planning to have their own model ready within months.

"We are our own jurisdiction with our own challenges, that's why we need to come up with our own plan that suits us," Mr Langbroek said.

"Not some sort of Australian government plan that they want to impose on us.

"We've seen the Australian government imposing their wishes and their demands that leads to more red tape and doesn't lead to better outcomes."

The Prime Minister's much-vaunted education reforms have been imperiled by a state backlash led by Queensland and Victoria. Under the Gonski model, which would cost $6.5 billion a year, schools would receive per-student funding with additional money for extra needs.

Mr Langbroek said Queensland was standing up for the constitution and railed against the "federal government scope creep".

In a speech to principals he said state governments were responsible for education but the federal government was using it as a wedge in an election year.
