Disgraced Liberal MP Daryl Maguire is yet to formally tender his resignation, a full 10 days after Premier Gladys Berejiklian said he was resigning and forcing a by-election in the seat of Wagga Wagga, following damaging ICAC revelations.

With parliament resuming on August 7, Mr Maguire has an opportunity to collect his salary of $165,066 plus electorate allowance — or $3174 a week — right up until then, despite the Premier having held a press conference on July 21 saying Mr Maguire was going.

The Premier’s office declined to comment on Mr Maguire’s delay in departure today.

It is understood the Premier wants a short, sharp campaign with a by-election for the seat to be held in September.

On July 21, Ms Berejiklian said: “I can confirm that this morning I spoke to Mr Maguire, he advised me of his intention to resign from parliament before it resumes.

“The Liberal Party has held that seat for half a century and the Liberal Party has opened nominations.”

Mr Maguire was forced to resign from the Liberal Party earlier this month after he was caught on a phone tap discussing with a former Canterbury councillor getting a cut of a property development.

Wagga Wagga is a safe Liberal seat, held by 12.9 per cent, but the Coalition has suffered some large by-election swings in its seven years in office, losing the safe seats of Orange and Miranda under premiers Baird and O’Farrell respectively.

The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers party is expected to run for the seat but has yet to find a candidate.
