Daryl Maguire digs in amid expectations of resignation
Daryl Maguire has left the electorate to deal with the death of his son-in-law amid expectations he might resign from parliament.
Liberal Wagga Wagga MP Daryl Maguire has announced he is leaving the electorate to be with his family after his son-in-law died from cancer.
Amid expectations he might resign from parliament after admitting to seeking secret commissions from a developer in ICAC, Mr Maguire released a statement this morning announcing a family member’s death in an indication that he is intent on hanging around.
Mr Maguire faces an expulsion motion from Labor when parliament returns on August 7 and Premier Gladys Berejiklian will come under pressure to produce her own expulsion motion if Mr Maguire has not resigned before that date.
He has already left the Liberal party and moved to the crossbench after being exposed at the corruption watchdog.
In his statement, Mr Maguire’s spokeswoman says: “No further comment will be made by Daryl Maguire MP regarding the ongoing ICAC inquiry.
“A member of Mr Maguire’s immediate family has passed away and Mr Maguire has left the electorate to be with his family.
“Mr Maguire asks that he and his family be provided with some privacy at this time.
“It is business as usual for the Wagga Wagga electorate office.
“The office is open 9-5, Monday to Friday and all constituent inquiries will continue to be answered as they have in the past.”
If Mr Maguire resigned, it would lead to a messy by-election just nine months out from the next state election.
