Royal wedding: Hollywood pals brought much-needed glamour
If there was an overriding mood to the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, it was one of worlds colliding — for the best.
If there was an overriding mood to the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, it was one of worlds colliding — for the best.
This was always going to be the case from the moment the Prince proposed to the American actress.
And while we saw it play out at the ceremony and the reception — the mix of tradition and modernity, the Church of England welcoming American preachers and gospel choirs — it played out most visually in the fashion.
But although Meghan may have successfully merged her former life and style with her new one in the British royal family, the guests showed more of a style divide.
British wedding parties often look like they could be transplanted trackside for the spring racing carnival at Flemington, albeit with less skin on show.
Amid the floral dresses, pastels and fascinators, Meghan’s Hollywood pals and the fashion set brought much-needed glamour to the event.
Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney was a standout in a bold yellow Stella McCartney dress with matching hat, further accessorised by husband George in a light grey suit and stubble.
Media mogul Oprah Winfrey also chose McCartney — a blush-pink dress with scalloped lace trim — and designer Victoria Beckham wore a slit-sleeve navy dress of her own design finished with towering red pumps.
Meghan’s Suits co-stars made quite the entrance.
Gina Torres wore a panama-style hat to finish off her red-and-white dress and Abigail Spencer went for 1940s chic in navy and white polka dots.
Gabriel Macht attended with his wife, Australian actress Jacinda Barrett, who wore a claret-coloured Emilia Wickstead dress.
Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, hit the perfect note as mother of the bride.
Ms Ragland wore a pale mint dress and matching coat embroidered with white flowers from Oscar de la Renta — a house strongly associated with US first ladies — and a matching pillbox hat.
When the guests reappeared at the reception later that evening, they were united in full black-tie glamour.
Tennis star Serena Williams swapped her blush Atelier Versace dress for a bold Valentino gown with black fitted bodice and floral skirt, while actress Priyanka Chopra swapped her lavender Vivienne Westwood suit for a dazzling, crystal-embellished Christian Dior gown.
Markle’s best friend, Canadian stylist Jessica Mulroney, whose three children were part of the bridal party, went with an embellished gold gown with cowl back for the reception at Frogmore House.
