Woman dead in Toowoomba house fire, man questioned by police
A man is being questioned by police over a possible arson attack on a Toowoomba home that killed a woman, with her two children found uninjured nearby.
A man is being questioned by police over a possible arson attack on a Toowoomba home, west of Brisbane early Tuesday morning that killed a woman.
The woman, who has yet to be publicly identified, was found dead at 4am inside the home, with her two children discovered uninjured nearby.
Police said the children were “safe and well” and now with relatives.
A 45-year-old man, believed to the dead woman’s husband, was located in Redcliffe, north-east of Brisbane and transferred to Toowoomba Police Station’s watch house for questioning.
No charges have been laid.
Detective Superintendent George Marchesini confirmed that two children were residing at the residence.
“What we do know is that we have one person that’s been located,” Mr Marchesini said.
“I can say that those children are safe and well and are accounted for.”
Homicide investigators from Brisbane have been called in to assist Toowoomba detectives with the ongoing full forensic investigation.
After the blaze was extinguished by Queensland Fire Department around 4am, police inspected the property, unable to verify the cause of the fire.
Mr Marchesini affirmed that the deceased person’s identity and gender won’t be confirmed until they conduct a full post-mortem examination.
“There’s still yet to be a number of inquiries and scientific examinations to determine the identity of that particular person,” the detective superintendent said.
“It is still early stages of the investigation, and obviously early stages of doing any thorough investigation of that particular scene.”
Police have confirmed there is not any ongoing threat to the community following the fatal house fire.
“There’s no threat in terms of the incident that occurred last night, and there’s no ongoing threat at the moment that we’re aware of in terms of what has occurred,” Mr Marchesini said.
“And that is something I can say with confidence.”
Investigations remain ongoing.
