When Chrissy in Sydney becomes vogue

For the August issue of the magazine, and Victoria Beckham’s sixth cover of Vogue Australia, she connected with Nicole Kidman over Zoom for a frank conversation about family, fashion and building a brand.

It’s the beginning of a beautiful friendship: Victoria Beckham and Nicole Kidman connecting via the pages of the latest issue of Vogue Australia.

It was Beckham’s request for Kidman, a woman she has always admired, to interview her for Beckham’s sixth cover of Vogue Australia, although finding a window of time in the schedules of two of the most in-demand women in the world proved tricky.

But in the middle of their respective holidays (Beckham, in Corsica celebrating her 25th wedding anniversary with husband David, and Kidman in the Bahamas for the Fourth of July long weekend with her family), the pair caught up on a Zoom call.

By the end of an almost hour-long conversation, the pair had made plans for “Chrissy in Sydney”, for Beckham’s youngest son Cruz, who has musical aspirations, to meet Kidman’s husband Keith Urban in Nashville, and for a Kidman family holiday at Casa Beckham in the Cotswolds.

“If it’s anything like the documentary, we’re moving in,” Kidman declared.

Kidman proved herself to be a big fan of the Netflix documentary Beckham released last year, asking Beckham about the viral moment from the first episode in which she revealed that she was driven to school in a Rolls Royce.

“I came from a working class background and so my dad in the ’80s, he was an entrepreneur, he started his business with my mum at the kitchen table and he did very well, so he bought himself a Rolls Royce,” Beckham explained, adding that she was “mortified” to be dropped off at school in the car.

“How things have changed! Nowadays, I’d be like, don’t worry about the van, let’s go in the Roller,” she joked.

“But in those days, we just wanted to fit in.”

The pair also discussed marriage; Beckham has just celebrated her 25th wedding anniversary, which prompted Kidman to share that she and Urban are 18 years married.

“It’s such an achievement,” said Beckham, who also said that “myself and David are in the next chapter” of their lives, with almost all of their children “flee[ing] the nest”.

“I love spending time with my husband,” Beckham said.

“Let me tell you – David Beckham is very funny. I have a husband I very much am still in love with, possibly more than when we first met. We really laugh.

“And we really support each other in regards to our careers and passions. I said to him last night – and the kids – after 25 years, I love your dad so much and I support him and continue to want him to be the best version of himself, and he does that for me.

“And it’s really important that the children see that. I feel very thankful and grateful that I have not compromised with my career, and I can still do what I love, and I enjoy it.”

Vogue Australia’s August issue is on sale on Monday.
