Weapons cache unearthed in routine search

NSW police have potentially stopped a tragedy occurring when they arrested a Cessnock man for possessing a cache of weapons.

In a stroke of good luck, NSW police have potentially stopped a tragedy occurring when they arrested a Cessnock man for possession of a cache of weapons, including homemade explosive devices, after searching his property over an unrelated incident.

On December 29, officers from the Hunter Valley police district arrested the 35-year-old in Aberdare in relation to an outstanding domestic violence incident and an alleged aggravated break and enter.

When they went to his house in Carrol Avenue, Cessnock, for a routine search of the premises, they allegedly discovered two improvised explosive devices and ammunition.

A further search of the home revealed a Taser and a rifle complete with scopes, ammunition and a silencer in the back shed.

The man did not hold a permit for the firearm or the ammunition.

The man was taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment for heatstroke and other injuries and has been refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Friday, although a NSW police spokeswoman said it may be a bedside hearing.

“(He) has a number of injuries so he may not be able to attend court; we’ll have to set up a videolink next to his bed,” she said.

Specialist police were called in to examine the weapons and homemade explosives, which were deemed safe.

While in hospital, the man was charged with driving and domestic-related offences alongside 10 offences relating to the possession of weapons.

The charges included the manufacture of explosive/gunpowder with intent to injure, although NSW police told The Australian they could not comment on whether they suspected the man was planning a terrorist attack on the public.

The combined charges could see the man face more than 25 years’ imprisonment.
