Vile chatroom abuse at elite Sydney private school Knox Grammar
Knox Grammar has suspended students after child abuse, racist, sexist and homophobic material was shared in a private chat room.
An elite Sydney private school has suspended students after child abuse, racist, sexist and homophobic material was shared in a private chat room.
Knox Grammar is investigating and moved to reassure parents on Wednesday as detectives from the NSW police Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad reviewed the material.
Some students have left the school, which charges up to $35,000 in annual fees, after the group Gang Gang on messaging app Discord was uncovered.
Students from the school were involved in setting up the chat group, The Daily Telegraph reports, and the material shared included videos appearing to show the rape of young men.
There were also comments about wanting to be a pedophile and raping children and account names included N...er Removal Service and F...otthater3000.
Knox Grammar headmaster Scott James sent a letter to parents on Wednesday saying there had been a range of disciplinary messages depending on what each boy had posted. “In regard to the images, some were taken during school activities and later doctored; the school has spoken with all families of identifiable students,” he said.
“To be very clear, the doctored images do not require mandatory reporting under child protection requirements and we have discussed the matter with police. The investigation is ongoing.”
Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty said the material in the group was under review by specialist detectives. “Police will continue to review activity, make inquiries and will work with the school, parents and the eSafety Commissioner in relation to any matters that arise,” she said.
The Australian contacted Knox Grammar for comment.
