Two men have been shot on one of Sydney’s busiest suburban streets, with the shooters still on the run.

Emergency services were called to a busy business, believed to be Adel’s Salon, on Marrickville Rd, Marrickville, about 1.50pm after reports about seven shots had been fired in the inner-west suburb.

Police found two men with gunshot wounds.

One man, 20, was shot in the chest and is believed to be in a serious condition, while the other man, 33, was shot in the buttocks and is believed to be in a stable condition. Both are known to police.

Shortly after the shooting, two cars were discovered on fire in nearby Marrickville and Dulwich Hill. Police believe the silver Stinger set alight in Marrickville was the getaway car and a third car – a white Toyota Camry with the number plate DMM59H – which remains outstanding, was used by one of the shooters to flee.

Billowing black smoke could be seen several suburbs away.

Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald described the shooting, only metres from Marrickville Police Station and in front of dozens of shoppers, as “very brazen”.

“That’s why we believe it is a targeted attack. It’s not random. And it’s fortunate no other member of the public was involved in that incident,” she said.

“They obviously don’t care where they do it.”

Geoffrey Ji, who own Cranes newsagency next to Adel’s, said he heard five gunshots and then about 15 seconds later two more.

“One customer of the barbershop who saw what happened, ran into the newsagency and hid until everything was safe,” Mr Ji said.

“After hearing the shots, I walked into the barbershop and I could see two boys sitting there in the corner and it was at that time I realised there must have been a shooting. It looked like they were injured. But the shooter escaped.”

A man who owns a business nearby, but wanted to remain anonymous, also said he heard seven or eight gunshots and saw a man flee the hairdresser and jump into a car that sped away.

“Marrickville is a very good place. I’ve been there for seven years and nothing like this has ever happened. It’s so bad, everyone is so scared, everyone was running,” he said.

Organised crime officers, the State Crime Command’s anti-gang squad, PolAir, the dog squad and highway patrol are all assisting in the investigation.

“My thoughts are with my community after a shooting in Marrickville across the road from my electorate office. My team are all safe,” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.
