Six people are being treated in hospital after a skydiving plane crashed on the banks of a lake on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula shortly after taking off.

Ambulance, police and firefighters raced to Lake Connewarre about 8am after the blue plane, which is based at Barwon Heads airport, crashed.

“Crews discovered (the) aircraft ran off the end of the runway,” a CFA spokesman said.

“All passengers (are) out of the plane with minor injuries.”

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said six patients have been taken to Geelong hospital.

“Paramedics are assessing a further 11 people at the scene,” the spokeswoman said.

Earlier, police said the engine cut out, forcing the pilot to crash land.
