A three-year-old boy was playing with his twin brother when he was struck and killed by a reversing car driven by a 16-year-old learner driver.

Police were called to the Bayside Central unit complex at Thorneside, on Brisbane’s Bayside, just after 3.30pm on Saturday after reports two children had been hit.

Witnesses reportedly heard their mother scream “No” and saw her cradling her son.

Paramedics tried to save the boy but he died at the scene. His brother was taken to the Queensland Children’s Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

The driver, who had a licensed adult driver in the car at the time, was taken to hospital with shock.

Residents were left shaken by the tragic accident, which they said happened near the entrance to the complex.

Forensic investigators examined the scene and a Toyota Corolla hatchback with L-plates was towed away on Saturday night.

Police said investigations were continuing and a report would be prepared for the coroner.
