A man has tragically discovered a one year-old dead in a car in Sydney’s inner west, after it is believed she was mistakenly left inside the vehicle.
It has been reported the man yelled “I killed my daughter” when he realised the child was still in the car, out the front of a childcare centre in Earlwood.
Police said she was found about 5.35pm when emergency services responded to reports of a child located unresponsive in a vehicle outside the centre on Marana Road.
Temperatures soared to 30 degrees in Sydney on Tuesday.
NSW Ambulance paramedics attended but the child – a 1-year-old girl – was declared deceased at the scene.
A male occupant of the vehicle – described by police as a direct relative – is assisting with inquiries at Burwood Police Station. It has since been reported he is in hospital dealing with the effects of shock. The child’s mother is also assisting with inquiries.
Superintendent Christine McDonald said at a press conference on Tuesday that the cause of death was still unknown but that police believed the child was “left inside the vehicle for an extended period of time on a very hot day here in Sydney”.
“Leaving a child inside a vehicle for an extended period of time can be deadly,” she said. “This is an absolute tragedy.”
Superintendent McDonald said there was “no doubt the parents will be extremely upset”.
“It’s something that affects the wider community as well,” she said. “This has a rippling effect right throughout our community because so many of us can put ourselves in a similar situation.”
The Daily Telegraph reported local Roy Gomes was mowing his lawn when he heard someone scream “I killed my daughter”.
“I ran over and he was holding the baby,” Mr Gomes said.
The man helped to administer CPR, traumatised by the incident himself.
