Thredbo chairlift accident: freak winds send skier flying
A skier at a NSW snow field was sent plummeting after a ‘freak gust of wind’ dislodged his chairlift.
A skier has escaped relatively unscathed from a fall after their chairlift was dislodged by a “freak gust of wind” at a popular NSW ski resort.
The unidentified person was riding the Gunbarrel quad chairlift at Thredbo yesterday afternoon when the chairlift seat they were riding was blown away.
The skier narrowly missed a tree to crash into the snow below with the chairlift landing several feet away.
A spokeswoman for the popular ski resort chalked the errant chairlift’s escape up to a “freak gust of wind”.
“Thredbo can confirm there was an isolated incident affecting a single chair on Gunbarrel chairlift at approximately 3pm on Monday 22 July 2019 caused by a freak gust of wind,” she said.
The spokeswoman said the skier was all right and no other chairlifts were affected.
“The guest involved in the incident sustained minor bruising only.
“No other guests or chairs were affected. Thredbo is committed to the safety of our guests and our people.”
Thredbo is experiencing north-westerly winds up to 90km/h as well as snow showers, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
