The sun will come out again, eventually

The Bureau says the east coast will cop at least one more lashing as the low pressure system moves into the Tasman.

After 10 days of relentless rain, the weather bureau has seen a light at the end of the tunnel and expects the hazardous conditions to ease by the end of the week.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the east coast low, which has inundated southern Queensland and much of NSW all the way to the Victorian border, will start drifting toward the Tasman Sea on Wednesday.

But until then, bureau meteorologist Dean Narramore said, the eastern states can expect further severe rainfall and damaging winds up to 90km/h, which is “obviously not great news”.

“On top of the flooding and rainfall that is occurring, this kind of wind speed … is likely to bring down trees and power lines,” he said.

Mr Narramore said that in six hours Sydney’s northern suburbs had 50-100mm of rain, which was pushing north toward the Central Coast and could cause “life-threatening and dangerous flash flooding”. But he said there was “minor to moderate flooding from the Queensland border all the way down to the Victorian border.”

On Tuesday evening, the SES had 69 active evacuation orders across the state with major flood warnings persisting across many areas of Sydney. There were eight warnings for Camden in the city’s southwest alone.

Moderate flooding in the Shoalhaven River and St George’s Basin could develop into major flooding by Wednesday evening.

The NSW south coast region is unlikely to face major rainfall but any rain is likely to cause minor to moderate flooding.

Meanwhile, major flood warnings continue across inland areas of southern Queensland including the Barwon, lower Moonie, Condamine and Balonne riverss.
