Hundreds of revellers gathered on the Bronte foreshore in defiance of social distancing orders on Christmas Day.

NSW Police pounced on the crowd of partygoers in Guinness shirts and Santa hats, issuing move on orders.

The crowd swelled to include hundreds of revellers at about 5pm, one eye witness said, as Sydneysiders sought to celebrate Christmas on the beach.

“At 5pm it was probably a couple of hundred or five hundred people, mostly backpackers,” the witness said.

“They were all on the beach and then as they were moved on by the police I saw a group with a speaker playing music, and they had a bit of a dance party.”

NSW Police confirmed officers had attended the scene and no arrests had been made.
