Spotify wrapped: Who took out the top spots?

It’s that time of year again. The day when every Swifty brags that they’ve been put in the top 10 per cent of global Taylor fans. For the Wiggles to (once again) shock everyone with their popularity. And for controversial American podcaster Joe Rogan to be crowned the most well-liked host for another year.
It is, of course, the time Spotify releases its Wrapped campaign: a personalised data reveal for all 381 million of its global users to discover their musical and podcast habits for the year.
Pop icon Taylor Swift was Australia’s most streamed artist of the year, and Australian band Glass Animals’ song Heat Waves took the top spot as the country’s most streamed track.
Local rising star the Kid LAROI featured heavily in this year’s wrap, not only in the global list but also coming out on top as Australia’s most streamed local artist for 2021.
Three of his songs were also in Australia’s most streamed tracks by Australian artists, including Stay (with Justin Bieber) taking out the No.1 spot, Without You at No.2, and So Done at No.4.
The Wiggles were Australia’s second- favourite local artists, followed by Hilltop Hoods, rock veterans AC/DC, and Flume.
Australians couldn’t get enough of teenage sensation Olivia Rodrigo’s album Sour, which was the country’s most streamed album, followed by Ed Sheeran’s = (“equals”) at No.2 and the Kid LAROI’s F..k Love (Savage) coming in No.3.
Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny took out the top spot for global artist of the year with more than 9.1 billion streams.
“I don’t want to be the No.1 most-streamed artist. I just make music. I just enjoy my work,” he said upon hearing the news.
The second most-streamed artist globally – and most streamed female artist of the year – was Taylor Swift, followed by South Korean boy band BTS, Canadian rapper Drake and Justin Bieber.
Olivia Rodrigo’s Driver’s License was streamed more than 1.1 billion times across the world, making it the most streamed song of the year.
The second spot was taken by Lil Nas X’s Montero (Call Me By Your Name), and Stay (with Justin Bieber) by the Kid LAROI enjoyed more success, coming in at No.3.
Olivia Rodrigo also took fourth spot with her song good 4 u and coming in fifth was Dua Lipa’s Levitating (featuring DaBaby).
The most-streamed album globally of 2021 was Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour, followed by Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgiaand Justin Bieber’s Justice.
Rounding out the list of top albums were Ed Sheeran’s =and Doja Cat’s Planet Her.
The Joe Rogan Experience took out the No.1 slot for most popular podcast of the year among Australian listeners, and was also the most popular among global listeners.
Globally, sex and relationship podcast Call Her Daddy was second most popular, and Crime Junkie was third.
Ted Talks Daily made the global top five for most-listened-to podcasts, as did The New York Times’ The Daily.
